NZ Alpine & Agriculture Encounter opens

September 14th, 2011

The opening of the new visitor attraction in Methven was very successful, with around 250 people enjoying the highly anticipated first preview of the NZ Alpine & Agriculture Encounter.

The Honorable Kate Wilkinson, Minister of Conservation opened the attraction, saying “That the attraction would be well utilised by school groups and visitors to the area.”

Chairman of the Methven Heritage Association, Graham Robertson spoke of the large number of people who had contributed to the project over the eight years of development. He spoke of the important roles of the architect, Stewart Ross, the designers, Storyinc. and builders Bradfords in achieving a quality job. Project Managers, Roxane Gajadhar, and latterly Coffey International were also key players in the successful completion of the three stages.

Many of the those attending were impressed by the high standard of the exhibition and enjoyed the variety available in the new attraction.

The attraction is now open daily from 10 – 5pm and tickets can be purchased from the Methven i-SITE counter.

The local’s Season’s Pass which allows people resident in the Ashburton District to return as many times as they like within the year, can be purchased from the Methven Heritage Centre office. Phone 3029666 for details.

23 February 2011:Home

February 3rd, 2011

bill-irwinWell known local photographer, Bill Irwin will be holding an exhibition ’Home’ which will open at Methven Heritage Centre 23 February 2011.

Home

We can become so familiar with our home that we forget all the reasons that make it a great place to live. A couple of years ago we decided it was time for a little adventure and less house and garden to look after. We sold our lovely house and thought about jumping the Tasman for a while,  looking at quite a few locations before deciding NZ was where we wanted to be. Sunny Nelson tempted, but eventually we decided Bank’s Peninsula had the right mix of visual beauty and big city proximity. We even bought a beautiful section at Church Bay and started to have house plans drawn up.

But the more we looked, the more we realised how much the people and place of Methven had to offer.  Sure, we still want to get away and see other pockets of the world, but we know where we want to go when it’s time for home. We have nearly finished building a new house, right next door to our last one. It is a little smaller and simpler but incorporates brilliant studio and gallery space, a great place to call home.

This exhibition  is a collection of some of my favourite visual reminders of why we couldn’t leave.

23 February 2011: Will Martin in Concert

January 11th, 2011

will-martinNew Zealand’s own Will Martin, announces his first ever performances in the South Island.

At twenty-six, he’s already packed in a lifetime of paying dues. Dedicated study of musical styles and vocal training of the highest calibre, together with an active ‘performance apprenticeship’ honed on worldwide stages, has turned this born and bred Kiwi into the complete entertainer. Since making the decision at the age of 18 to follow his musical dream, Will has gone from strength to strength: from entertaining on cruise ships and rocking the Hard Rock Café, to leading countries in their respective national anthems at some of the world’s most prestigious sporting venues.

His 2007 debut album – ‘A New World’ was an epic collection of classical crossover songs, which simultaneously reflected Will’s origins and the scope of his unfaltering ambition. It also created history when it debuted on release in the UK at Number 1, making him the youngest tenor in musical history to top the classical charts.
His very new album currently in the Top 40 Chart, ‘Inspirations’ takes a fresh look at classic popular songs by songwriters such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Sting. He will perform songs from both of these albums on this 2-hour concert tour.

Tickets go on sale January 10 and are available from Methven i-Site.  General Admission.
