Our ANZAC People

April 18th, 2012

The Methven Historical Society and Methven Heritage Centre are jointly curating a special ANZAC exhibition to be held over the month of April.

“With the trial and tribulations faced by the Historical Society in the past year, we are very pleased to be back to an important part of our core business, which is presenting Methven’s history to the community,” commented the Society’s President, Kathryn McKendry, referring to the demise of the Society’s Museum which was badly earthquake damaged.

“The exhibition features items from our Collection, wartime film footage, and photos from the private collections of our Service people, some originals and others reproductions,” explained Mrs McKendry. Manager of the Heritage Centre, Jackie Hunter-Letham says that she and her team are delighted to be working with the Historical Society on this exhibition.

“The Methven Heritage Association is very mindful that this building is a memorial to those who have fallen in the Wars. This exhibition is intended as a tribute to them. It is also a wonderful opportunity to remind our community that the Methven Historical Society is still actively acquiring and caring for their Collection even though the Museum itself is no longer open. We hope that this joint exhibition here at the Heritage Centre will be the first of many.”

Local people who might be willing to loan items such as uniforms, framed photos and other memorabilia to include in the exhibition are asked to contact the Heritage Centre.

From Gershwin to Gaga, from Motown to Madonna, from Bacharach to Britney the Christchurch Pops Choir is heading to the Methven Heritage Centre.

The end result is the combination of some of Christchurch’s best talent singing talent to form the first choir of its kind in NZ. The choir has gone from strength to strength with now up to 70 voices performing together to deliver a diverse range of music to suit almost all musical tastes!

Bronwyn Shimmin – Favourite Strokes Exhibition

March 7th, 2012

The South African born artist works predominantly in oils and acrylics but enjoys the creative spectrum of all mediums. She takes her inspiration from life and prefers to paint on location or from reference sketches and photos, finishing the work back at her studio.

“My passion for painting extends to my passion for the environment; its beauty and fragility. These concepts I constantly strive, through both my representational and conceptual work, to achieve,” says Shimmin.

Bronwyn has been immersed in art practically all her life, attending art classes and workshops from an early age. While mostly self-taught she studied Interior Design, and apprenticed under a number of well-known artists. Recently Shimmin has completed an art paper through Massey University, an Arts and Creativity Honours Diploma through The Learning Connexion; and qualified as an Arts Education Programmer (Golden USA).

She puts this training to good use, tutoring art classes and workshops from her home based studio in Temuka.

She has exhibited widely nationally and internationally in group exhibitions and has had a number of solo exhibitions. Bronwyn was also featured as Artist in Residence at the Saffron Gallery, Timaru. Consequently, her work is represented in a number of galleries and private collections within New Zealand and worldwide.

The ’Favourite Strokes’ Exhibition at the Methven Heritage Centre Art Gallery is open daily from 10am – 5pm until the 2nd April, 2012.

Art Exhibition – Cash & Carry

December 12th, 2011

Over thirty Mid-Canterbury artists are exhibiting works in the annual Cash & Carry Art Exhibition at the Heritage Centre Art Gallery.
This is an ideal opportunity to purchase a special piece of local art at a very reasonable price.
“We are intending to hold this exhibition each year, just prior to Christmas and extending over the holiday period,” said Jackie Hunter-Letham, Centre Manager. “Last year’s inaugural event was very successful, and many local people took the opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts. Visitors to Methven also purchased works to take home with them as a memory of their trip.”
“During the year we host solo and joint exhibitions, so this particular exhibition is a yearly opportunity for emerging local artists to exhibit their work to the public. A number of College students have entered items too, which is especially pleasing. We are really delighted that so many artists have chosen to participate. It is a wonderful response.”
The exhibition has paintings in a variety of mediums, as well as a number of photographs and a wire work. Each artist is displaying two pieces, which when sold, can be taken home immediately by the purchaser. The artists can then replace the sold piece with another artwork.
Hunter-Letham says that they have a number of exhibitions planned for next year, but are keen to talk to other artists and art groups. “We’d love to have a variety of art exhibited at the Heritage Centre, such as pottery, wood turning, weaving and installations.”

The Christmas Cash & Carry Exhibition at the Methven Heritage Centre Art Gallery is open daily from 10am – 5pm from Saturday the 10th December until the end of January.

Karen Smith Art Exhibition – What I See

September 14th, 2011

Karen Smith is a passionate landscape artist who works full time from her studio at home in the  foothills of Staveley. She has been painting for the last twenty years but has always had an interest in art since a young child.

Her solo exhibition at the Methven Heritage Centre Art Gallery, reflects her love of the New Zealand landscape, the forever changing light and moods of the brooding skies of a southerly and our norwest winds.

Karen enjoys all aspects of art and will paint what she feels is right for her on the day, hence the variety in her work. She paints outdoors as well but has recently discovered the joy of heading out to remote huts in the back country with fellow artists.

Karen is the recipient of many awards, her most recent being Peoples Choice award, at the Ashburton Society of Arts Exhibition for her first portrait she painted, of Austen Deans. Karen has works throughout NZ and abroad and couldn’t think of a better job to have.
