It’s hard to believe that in just one hour, you can drive across the scenic Canterbury Plains and arrive at Methven, the gateway of New Zealand’s South Island high country.
The trip from Christchurch International Airport is even shorter - just 50 minutes!
The town is located close to the base of the mountains and is famous as the home of the Mount Hutt Ski Area. With a population of around 1500 people, Methven caters to a thriving farming area and becomes a bustling, ski township in the winter months.
This dual-based economy means that the township supports over 20 different cafe’s, restaurants and bars as well as over 30 accommodation operations.
Methven is a base for a myriad of outdoor adventure activities, but also has cultural activities on offer, such as art & craft galleries and museums.
The really special thing about Methven though, is the ‘Methvenites’. They are enormously proud of their town and go out of their way to make visitors feel welcome.
