The Plan

Since May 2003, members of the Methven District Heritage Association has worked tirelessly on plans to create a dynamic new tourism and events facility in Mid-Canterbury that will benefit the region culturally, economically and socially into the future.

For more than 50 years the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall has played an important role in the town and its surrounding community, but was in serious need of refurbishment.

While retaining the Hall's memorial status and role as a venue for performances and events, the original building has been extended and upgraded to include an array of new facilities, and create an exceptional new destination for the region.

The purpose built 'NZ's Alpine and Agriculture Encounter' is an interactive exhibition to celebrate the two industries that have shaped Methven - agriculture and snow sports. The Centre is also be home to the 'NZ Snow Heritage Collection', a national archive of snow sports history, memorabilia film and photography.

The development includes a new theatrette and 'Hall of Memories' - a permanent exhibition honouring those who served during the wars.

Education is a key focus, with a comprehensive programme of activities for primary and secondary pupils, in areas such as agriculture, geology, social sciences and tourism. There is also be the opportunity for satellite activities giving visitors the chance to extend their experience, visit working farms, or explore significant local geology, geography, flora and fauna.

The existing Mt Hutt Memorial Hall & Auditorium has been refurbished to a high standard and provides a spectacular setting for conferences, events and functions.

Methven i-SITE and visitor centre is located at the southern end of the complex along with the new Heritage Cafe.

The landscaped grounds open out to the town centre and provide a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, and a venue for outdoor events creating an exciting new hub for the district.

Community Support - Can you help?

The buidling work is now completed but the work is not over yet.

It has to be said that this $5.6 million project would not have progressed so far and so quickly without the enormous local support which it received. Two million dollars was made up of donations of both small and large amounts, in cash and in kind, all given by local people. The remainder of the money has been sourced through grants, sponsorship, fundraising and a loan.

The Association’s Board of Management is still actively seeking donations or sponsorship to reduce the loan. There are a number of ways in which supporters can be acknowledged. If you are interested in discussing a donation with one of our Board members, please make contact through our offices.
